Need Advice
Hello,
I'm 4 mos post-op (RNY) and seem to be having a difficult time with food. I am easily naseauted (sp?) and often get sick from the mere smell of foods. One day I can something (like ham) and the next day it irritates my pouch.
I don't know what's wrong, but it starting to get depressing. I almost feel like I can't eat anything anymore! Any advice?

Hi, we had our surgeries on the same day...and there are days I can't handle even the smell of most food and when this happen I have a cup of peppermint or chamomile tea and try eating about 1/2 hour afterward. It seem to help me. Ham is a difficult for for me to eat as is chicken. Ground meat such as turkey and lean beef are easiest for me. Just keep plugging along and you should do fine. If things get too bad call you surgeon.

I went through the same thing from month 3 to month 4. I couldn't eat anything and many things i'd been eating for weeks. I reverted back to liquid protein for a month and slowly started adding foods again and had no problem. You didn't say whether you're dumping, throwing up along with the nausea...
Often I can't eat leftovers. Just roll back as far as you need to in order to get your protein in. For me it meant going back to protein liquids. The pouch rules the roost.
Good luck and take heart, it's just part of getting healthy.

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your reply. As far as the naseau goes, sometimes it accompanied by dumping. It makes me feel like vomitting, but every since the surgery...I haven't been able.
I'm beginning to notice that I can't eat leftovers either. So, it's very comforting to hear that others are experiencing the same sort of mayhem!
Thanks again for your advice!

Hang in there- you will become aclimated to what you can handle. I had my surgery 3 years ago am down 130 pounds. I feel great. The key is to always eat small portions 4 to 6 times a day even later on when you can handle more then a few bites. This will keep your pouch small and the weight off.
Good Luck

I was sick for a very long time. I was in the bathroom more than I was out of it, with vomiting. I resorted to refried beans with cheese on top. I ate that for almost 8 months, then I slowly intergrated to real foods. No white chicken meat, only the legs or thighs, I don't eat meat very often now, if I do, VERY small bites chewed to death, I have changed to eating alot of soy now, and I never even looked at it before. Make sure that you tell your doctor, they may have some good suggestions for you. My doctor didn't say a word when I complained. Anyway, if you do eat, make sure you eat slowly, small pieces, chew everything 10 times more than you would have before, do not drink with meals. Wait at least a half hour after to sip your water. My doc also said. none 15 minutes before too.
Wishing you luck, and it will change, just keep in touch with your doctor and keep him advised of the problems you are having.
